Journalism

I’m a journalist with over 10 years of experience covering travel, arts and culture, home and design, business, and more.

On assignment, I’ve written a first-person travel piece for The Washington Post, shared the story of the family farmers who grow the Biltmore Estates’ Christmas trees for Southern Living, and explored Charlotte’s museum mile for Our State magazine.

Eno Publishers selected my Charlotte magazine feature story, “Rooted: Trees are the Soul of Our City” for the collection, 27 Views of Charlotte: The Queen City in Prose and Poetry.

Brand &
Sponsored Content

I develop creative content for large and small brands, local and international, and help companies create engaging, effective newsletters and corporate content.

I have deep experience leading media relations and brand communications. For many years, I worked for Charlotte’s largest performing arts nonprofit and saw the organization through a mission overhaul and brand development. Under my strategic communications leadership, the organization’s social media reach nearly quadrupled and collaborative visibility projects gained international attention from NPR and Fox Sports to CNN.

Specialties include: creative content development, newsletters, print marketing materials, brag sheets, and more.

Editing

As a staff editor for Where Traveler and Charlotte magazines, I developed creative feature packages and oversaw travel content. I also created, contributed to and assigned writers for the feature 50 Things Every Charlottean Should Do, the most popular magazine digital story to date at the time of publication.

I have a sharp eye for consistency and have performed copy-editing and fact-checking services for alumni publications, children’s stories, and sales books, among others.

  • “Virginia has been a reliable part of our freelance team for several years. Her copy is always fact-checked and on time, and I appreciate that she approaches each assignment with genuine curiosity and interest for the subject; it shows in her writing. I love that she's not afraid to dive into new subjects, such as food, wedding style, and interior design. We've been lucky to have her byline in all three of our titles!”
